THE HISTORY OF NY-NJ TRAILER SUPPLY

Founded August 1936, New York Trailer Builders Supply occupied a small 20' by 90' space at 229 West 58th Street near Columbus Circle in NYC. The second floor storefront allowed customers easy walk in access to trailer parts and accessories from manufacturers such as Hammerblow, Atwood Vacuum Machine Co., the Crown Co., etc.

When the Croft Co. of Tacoma, Washington pitched their bumper hitch, New York Trailer Builders Supply instantly became an authorized dealer for a number of years. With advancements in technology and increased safety New York Trailer Builders Supply was forced to seek out a new manufacturer. In 1946 Draw-Tite MFG Co. arrived with a well-constructed chrome plated permanent mount hitch. Custom applications allowed for a wider variety of models and ease of installation. Solid manufacturing and consistent production allowed the company to develop further and expand their operation.

Expansion was necessary as other manufacturers like Fulton, Reese and Kelsey-Hayes began to flood the market with quality products. In 1984, larger storage requirements moved the business across the Hudson to New Jersey settling at 1401 Route 23 South in Butler. The store was renamed NY-NJ Trailer Supply and is still today an authorized distributor for Dexter Axle, Draw-tite, Reese, Fulton, Bulldog, Wesbar, and more.

In 1993, the business was purchased by Rawn Leegwater and his family and still owns it today. The business was expanded from 2000 to 6,000 square feet. NY-NJ Trailer Supply is able to stock a wide variety of trailer hitches, parts, and accessories. A fully functional garage allows for quick installation of hitches and the ability to service various types of trailers, including enclosed, equipment and utility trailers. Several years ago a NJ car dealer’s license was acquired and they started selling trailers.

The staff has many years of experience in the trailer industry, attending industry shows and technical training every year. Rawn has been a long time member of the Hitch and Electrical Council for the Horizon group which owns Draw-tite, Reese, Tekonsha, Bulldog, Fulton, Wesbar, Bargman, and Rola Brands. The council holds monthly meetings discussing new products, product development and design. Manager Tim DeBlock has been with the company for over 17 years. Tim handles the all axle ordering from Dexter Axle, as well as many other vendors.
